Will you actually see Mt Fuji? Visibility by month, and what to do when it hides

Six mornings in ten in winter, one in ten in July. The honest odds, from the team that runs the day.

The short answer

It depends heavily on the month. Records kept by Fuji City show the mountain visible on about 60% of mornings in December and January, and only about 10% in July. Winter mornings are your best chance. Summer afternoons are your worst.

The numbers

~60%

of mornings in December and January

~10%

of mornings in July

Fuji City's 8am records, 1991 to 2025, counting days the whole mountain was visible. Fuji City is on the mountain's south side, not at Lake Kawaguchi, so read these as a guide to the season, not a promise for the lake.

Month by month

MonthsYour chancesWhy
Nov to FebBestCold, dry air and clear mornings. Snow on the summit. Six mornings in ten in December and January.
Mar to May, OctMixedAbout four mornings in ten. Spring haze, and cherry blossom at the lake, usually in April.
SepPoorTyphoon season. About one morning in four.
Jun to AugPoorestThe rainy season, then hot, humid air. The whole mountain shows on about one morning in ten.

Time of day matters as much as month

Even on a good day, cloud tends to build around the summit as the air warms up. The clearest views are usually early in the morning. That is why any honest Fuji day starts early: arriving at lunchtime throws away the best hours.

How to check on the day

  • Look at the live webcams around Lake Kawaguchi the morning you go
  • Check the cloud forecast for the Fuji area, not for Tokyo
  • Can you see it from Tokyo? On clear winter days Fuji shows up from high viewpoints in the city, which is a very good sign

When it hides

Some days the mountain stays inside a cloud from morning to night. What to do instead, near the lake:

  • Walk the north shore. The lake and the flowers in Oishi Park are worth the trip on their own
  • Wait an hour. Clouds move. The mountain often appears for a few minutes at a time
  • Take the ropeway up the hill on the east shore. Sometimes the summit pokes above the cloud
  • Have a long lunch. Seriously. Sit by a window that faces the mountain

Planning the day itself? Read the realistic Kawaguchiko plan.

Fuji, if she's feeling sociable

A day out to Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of Mt Fuji. On a clear day the mountain shows up in the water too. On a cloudy day, the lake is still lovely.
