Lake Kawaguchiko day trip from Tokyo: the realistic plan (and the rushed one to avoid)

Two hours each way, one mountain that may or may not show up. Here is a day that fits, and the one that only fits on paper.

Snow-capped Mount Fuji reflected in Lake Kawaguchi
The short answer

Plan for one lake, one or two viewpoints, a proper lunch and an early start. Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchi takes about two hours each way, so a day that promises ten or more stops spends most of its time in a vehicle or a queue, often after the clouds have already covered Fuji.

How far is it, really?

Lake Kawaguchi sits at the north foot of Mt Fuji, about 100 km from central Tokyo. By road it is roughly two hours each way. The direct limited express train from Shinjuku is about the same. On weekends and holidays the expressway back into Tokyo is often slow, so two hours can become three.

That means a 12-hour day out gives you six to seven hours on the ground, at most. Everything below is about spending those hours well.

The rushed version, and why it disappoints

Many day tours sold online list 8 to 17 stops around the lakes in one day. On paper it looks like value. In practice it looks like this:

  • 15 to 20 minutes at each viewpoint, most of it spent finding the bus again
  • The famous pagoda view squeezed in at midday, after the climb, in a crowd
  • Lunch at a roadside stop, eaten fast
  • The best Fuji light, early morning, spent on the expressway

The realistic plan

Fewer stops, an early start, and time to actually look. Times are a guide; traffic and season move them around.

  1. 07:00

    Leave Tokyo early

The single biggest thing you can do for your Fuji chances. Eat breakfast early or take it with you.

  2. 09:15

Chureito Pagoda, if your legs are willing

The postcard view: a five-storey pagoda with Fuji behind it. It is in Fujiyoshida, a short drive from the lake, and the viewpoint is up nearly 400 steps. Allow an hour. Skip it without guilt if anyone in your group finds stairs hard.

  3. 10:45

The north shore of the lake

Oishi Park and the shore around it give you Fuji across the water, with flowers in season. This is the view most people come for.

  4. 12:30

A proper lunch by the lake

Sit down. You have earned it, and it is the bit of the day people remember.

  5. 14:00

A slow walk along the shore

Or the ropeway up the hill on the east shore for a higher view, if the mountain is still out.

  6. 16:00

    Head back to Tokyo

Back for dinner around 18:30, later if the expressway is busy.

What about the Fuji 5th Station?

The 5th Station is a stop on the mountain itself, at about 2,300 m, reached by a toll road. It is a different day from the lake. The road can close or restrict traffic in winter snow and bad weather, and in the summer climbing season private cars are not allowed up. If a tour promises the 5th Station in January, ask what happens when the road is shut.

When Fuji hides

Some days the mountain stays inside a cloud all day. It happens in every season, and more often in summer. The lake is still lovely, the walk is still good, and lunch still tastes the same. We wrote a whole post on the odds: Will you actually see Mt Fuji?

Who this day suits

  • Parents and grandparents: skip the pagoda steps and the day is mostly flat
  • Children: the lake shore and a ropeway beat a long list of viewpoints
  • Photographers: go early, and give yourself time to wait for the cloud to move

Quick questions

How long does it take to get from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko?

About two hours each way by road or by the direct train from Shinjuku. Allow longer on weekends and holidays, when the expressway back into Tokyo is often busy.

Is Chureito Pagoda at Lake Kawaguchi?

Close, but not on the lake. It is in Fujiyoshida, a short drive away, and the viewpoint is up nearly 400 steps.

Can I do Kawaguchiko and Hakone in one day?

It is possible on paper and tiring in practice. Pick one. Two hours each way is already a lot of travel for one day.

What is the best month for a Kawaguchiko day trip?

November to February gives the clearest views of Fuji, and mornings are best. October is a little less reliable. April brings cherry blossoms, with more cloud.

Day 5 of The Tokyo Waddle

Fuji, if she's feeling sociable

A day out to Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of Mt Fuji. On a clear day the mountain shows up in the water too. On a cloudy day, the lake is still lovely.

  • A day out of the city to Lake Kawaguchi, at the foot of Mt Fuji
  • Mt Fuji across the water, and reflected in it on a still, clear day
  • Lunch by the lake, then a slow walk along the shore
